2014 - Bumper Crop in a Drought Year

2014 Touché - Napa Valley     (Only 600 bottles were made)

95 points (Steve Heimoff)

"This is En Garde’s most tannic new ’14. It’s also their oakiest and most expensive. The result in a wine that’s nowhere drinkable now due to the astringency. Buried well beneath the tannins is a wealth of ripe, mountain-concentrated blackberries, blueberries, pencil lead and cedar. The question is, will it age? The answer is Yes. The structure is splendid, the finish is long and dry, the balance is impeccable. It’s a firm, masculine, sturdy Cab, showcasing Napa mountain fruit at its best. Like En Garde’s other Cabs, the alcohol is heady. I would cellar this for at least ten years- Steve Heimoff

92-95 points (The Wine Advocate- RobertParker.com)

"The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Touché (50% Cabernet Sauvignon from Diamond Mountain, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain, and the rest Cabernet Sauvignon from Mt. Veeder and a bit of Cabernet Franc from Mt. Veeder) is altogether exceptional. Gorgeously rich, opulent, and a real elixir, this wine is dense, concentrated and deep. It should drink well for at least 20-25 years. - Robert Parker

94+ points (NorCal Wine)

"Touché is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon from En Garde’s Howell Mountain, Diamond Mountain, and Mount Veeder vineyards. It shows plenty of ripe dark fruit on the nose—cherries, prunes, and berries— along with tangy herb and spice which give it a slight, Barolo Chinato accent. The delicious palate is dry and full-bodied with very fine, soft, mouth coating texture and bouncy acidity. Flavors match the nose, weaving in and out, with great intensity and no heaviness. Drink now through 2030." - Fred Swan

2014 Le Bijou du Roi Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon - Diamond Mountain

93+ points (NorCal Wine)

"This reserve wine from the Sori Bricco vineyard is more intense, riper, and more flamboyantly fruited than the standard release. Aromas of ripe black cherry, blackberry, black currant, prune, spice, oak, and dried orange peel burst from the glass. The extremely long, warming palate is all about tangy black cherry, black currant, spice, and chocolate, extended by gentle waves of acidity. Structure comes from fine, soft, mouth-coating tannins. Includes a dab of Cabernet Franc. Drink now – 2035" - Fred Swan

93 points (Steve Heimoff)

"Shows the ripe, concentrated flavors En Garde is known for, yet with a balancing structural integrity. The first impression is impressive in blackcurrants, cassis liqueur, dark chocolate shavings, anise and minerals, with plush new oak providing smoky-sweet, toasty overtones. The tannins are significant, yet soft and yielding in the modern way. The finish is long and spicy. Will benefit from aging " - Steve Heimoff

91-93 points (The Wine Advocate - RobertParker.com)

"I tasted through the 2014s, which are not yet in bottle, but here are some brief tasting notes for readers. The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Le Bijou du Roy is the pick of the litter from Diamond Mountain. Rich, concentrated and floral, with loads of blue and black and red fruits, it is spicy, earthy and altogether impressive." - Robert Parker

91 points (Wine Enthusiast Magazine)

"Brawny in enveloping tannins, this is a mountain of a wine, showy in its mountainous provenance and grip. With a touch of leather, it offers coffee, mocha and a juicy, lasting layering of blackberry dusted in dark chocolate." - Virginie Boone

2014 Adamus - Diamond Mountain

94 points (Steve Heimoff)

"A big, dense, tannic wine, packed with concentrated fruit: black currants, dried cherries, cassis, and meaty, leathery notes, even suggestions of soy sauce, licorice, roasted coffee and jerky. Very delicious! Probably the most complex of the ‘14s. But the tannins are hard. I’d cellar it for a good six years, although some heat from alcohol might be a problem." - Steve Heimoff

90-92 points (The Wine Advocate - RobertParker.com)

"I tasted through the 2014s, which are not yet in bottle, but here are some brief tasting notes for readers. As for the 2014 Adamus, this proprietary red from Howell Mountain is a blend of 44% Cabernet Sauvignon, 44% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc and 2% miscellaneous grapes. It is dense ruby/purple, rich, concentrated and far more interesting than the other Diamond Mountain. It should turn out to be outstanding." - Robert Parker

90 points (Wine Enthusiast Magazine)

"Brawny in toasted oak and grippy ripeness, this blend is softly layered in plum and black cherry. The secondary characteristics complement the fruit in cinnamon and black pepper." - Virginie Boone

2014 Cabernet Sauvignon - Mount Veeder

94 points (Steve Heimoff)

"Surprisingly lithe, despite alcohol of 15.6%. The wine is very ripe in jammy black currants, blueberries, sweet herbs and dark chocolate shavings, with plenty of new oak richness, and the alcohol lends it heat. But it has a curious delicacy. It sure is delicious and heady. Shows the intensity and concentration of mountain fruit, with the acidity and minerality that Mount Veeder, one of Napa’s cooler appellations, contributes. Addictively fine, and ready to drink now, with big foods like steak. Technically the high alcohol mitigates against aging, but the balance is so good that the wine ought to last for at least ten years." - Steve Heimoff

91 points (Wine Enthusiast Magazine)

"Brightly perfumed and inviting in dark, brooding cherry and blackberry, this mountain wine is moderate in structure and powerfully ripe, with forceful, persistent tannins and plenty of complementary oak. It finishes in sage, dried herb de Provence and black pepper." - Virginie Boone

2014 Cabernet Franc - Mount Veeder

91-93 points (The Wine Advocate - RobertParker.com)

"I tasted through the 2014s, which are not yet in bottle, but here are some brief tasting notes for readers. The 2014 Cabernet Franc from Mt. Veeder is pungent, spicy, earthy, and floral, with plenty of foresty notes as well as blue and black fruits. It is rich, impressive and potentially exceptional." - Robert Parker

2014 Cabernet Sauvignon - Howell Mountain

93 points (NorCal Wine)

"The En Garde Howell Mountain is dark ruby-purple in the glass with enticing aromas of black cherry, briary black currant, dark mineral, oak, and meadowy herb. It’s dry on the palate with medium-plus body and very fine, softish, well-integrated tannins that are deftly balanced by acidity. Richly fruited and intense in the mouth, the long-lasting flavors include tangy red and black cherry, red vine, spice, orange peel, and toasted wood. Compared to the Diamond Mountain wine, this one is tangier with more red fruit and herb. Drink over the next 15 years.- Fred Swan

92 points (Wine Enthusiast Magazine)

"Tart tangy red fruit tastes slightly dried and fig-like in this lush plush red that's full bodied and ripe. The volcanic soils of the appellation accent mineral-laden teases of crushed rock and stone." - Virginie Boone

91 points (Steve Heimoff)

"A big, rich, lush Cabernet, with massive black currant, blackberry jam, espresso, cola and dark chocolate flavors. Lots of sweet, toasty new oak, proportionate to the size of the wine. Long, spicy finish, with a fine, firm minerality. Classic Napa Valley mountain Cab, sturdy, elegant and tannic, but with some heat from alcohol and a touch of over-ripeness that might prevent longterm aging.- Steve Heimoff

2014 Cabernet Sauvignon - Diamond Mountain

92 points (NorCal Wine)

"The nose on this deep, purple wine is dense blackberry, black cherry, dark spice, oak, and dry forest floor. The flavors are very intense and focused with chewy black currant, black cherry and spice, dark mineral. Body is a sinewy medium-plus with plenty of fine grained, softly chalky texture which effectively frames the fruit. The finish is very long, juicy and a bit warm. This wine’s got gravitas (and gravel)—a darker, more brooding, and more structured Cabernet than the Howell Mountain. Best 2022-2030- Fred Swan

91 points (Steve Heimoff)

"Another big Cab, solidly Napa-esque in style. The aroma explodes with complex, pure blackcurrants, cassis and smoky new oak, with intriguing notes of crushed pepper, anise and pencil shavings. In the mouth, about what you’re expect: lush, rich, complex, dense and ripe in Cabernet flavor. The fruit is enormous, the mountain tannins gripping but smooth, the acidity fine, and there’s a bit of stony minerality. Some heat from high alcohol is evident." - Steve Heimoff

90 points (Wine Enthusiast Magazine)

"Thick and dense in blue fruit and billowy tannin, this is a well-made, hyper ripe red, generous in oak and a lasting thread of leather and black pepper." - Virginie Boone

2014 Pinot Noir Reserve - Russian River Valley

94 points (SteveHeimoff.com)

"It is a composite of the single vineyard wines: Olivet Court, Starkey Hill and Gold Ridge. It’s a close approximation of them all, made in the winery’s style: rich, dense, layered, complex. It’s also the oakiest of the bunch. The result is delicious: red currants, licorice, cranberries, tea, beet root, wild mushroom, cloves, anise, wrapped into firm tannins. Is it “better” than the rest? Not really. But it sure is good." - Steve Heimoff

94 points (JamesSuckling.com)

"Dried berry, meat and smoke follow through to a full body, round and velvety tannins and a juicy finish. Serious energy and verve. Drink in 2019." - James Suckling

93+ points (The Wine Advocate)

"Pale ruby-purple colored, the 2014 Pinot Noir Reserve hits pay dirt with expressive red cherries, crushed cranberries and lavender notes, plus subtle hints of tree sap and dried Provence herbs. Medium-bodied, the palate picks up where the nose left off, with great red fruit intensity, firm, fine tannins and plenty of tension. The finish is long and minerally." - Lisa Perrotti-Brown

93 points (Wine Enthusiast Magazine)

"Deliciously well-integrated, this is a rich, vibrant and intense wine that is lengthy and broadly expansive in baked strawberry, rhubarb and dark cherry. Cardamom and black tea make appearances within the fruit and brawny oak." - Virginie Boone

92 points (Pinot File)

"Favorite barrels. Clones “828,” 115, Martini, Pommard and 23. Aged 18 months in French oak barrels, 60% new. · Moderate garnet color in the glass. The nose is richly fruited with spiced black cherry and sumptuous oak. Tenacious flavors of black cherry and blackberry in a juicy, mid weight style with firm tannins for the long haul. The toasty oak is a bit too extroverted now but should integrate further over time. This wine is like an awkward teenager that will need a few years to mature and may be more deserving of a higher score at that time. The winemaker had a vision for this wine as it is composed of favorite barrels in cellar." - William "Rusty" Gaffney, M.D.

2014 Pinot Noir Devoto Vineyard - Green Valley of Russian River Valley

97 points (SteveHeimoff.com)

"The wine, whose alcohol is 13.5%, is exceedingly fine. It first strikes you for deliciousness: savory essence of raspberries, a vein of red licorice, a taste of wild mushroom, the sweetness of roasted oak, a pleasantly titillating clove-and-white pepper spiciness. Then you notice how light and silky it is, how “transparent” to use that overworked word. Another sip; a third; the wine is addictive. A Pinot Noir triumph, superb to drink now. If I had a case, I’d drink a bottle a year." - Steve Heimoff

91 points (JamesSuckling.com)

"Vivid fruit aromas of strawberry and lemon rind follow through to a medium body, tangy fruit and a fresh finish. Drink now." - James Suckling

91 points (Pinot File)

"Clones 667, “828,” 115. Harvest Brix 24.0º. Aged 18 months in French oak barrels, 50% new. · Light ruby red color in the glass. The nose engages with fragrant notes of dark red Bing cherry and fertile earth. Light in weight, but flavorful, offering the essence of red cherry fruit framed by nutty oak. Crisp and elegant, with good transparency, a suede texture and an appealing cherry-blessed finish that has good length." - William "Rusty" Gaffney, M.D.

90 points (The Wine Advocate)

"Pale ruby-purple colored, the 2014 Pinot Noir Gold Ridge is youthfully subdued with faint scents of cherries and dusty earth, plus hints of iron ore and crushed stones. Light to medium-bodied, it possesses plenty of elegance and sophistication with a satiny texture and understated quality that nonetheless lingers with very good persistence." - Lisa Perrotti-Brown

90 points (Wine Enthusiast Magazine)

"This is a bright, fully realized wine from the distinctive appellation: soft with an integrated approach to its use of oak. Wild strawberry, cranberry and a threading of dried herb combine effortlessly into a pleasurable whole." -Virginie Boone

2014 Pinot Noir Starkey Hill - Russian River Valley

94 points (Pinot File)

"Vineyard is located in Sebastopol just outside the Green Valley AVA. Owned by Diane Starkey and cared for by Arturo Robledo. 30+-year-old vines including clones 23, “828,” and Pommard. Harvest Brix 23.6º. 15% whole cluster. Aged 18 months in French oak barrels, 40% new. · Moderately light garnet color in the glass. A wine with special drive and purpose, offering engaging aromas of blueberrypomegranate, blackberry preserves and subtle oak. Enters with a charge of blue and black berry fruits framed by fine-grain tannins and maintains in the mouth. Impeccable harmony, with a long, powerfully aromatic finish." - William "Rusty" Gaffney, M.D.

93 points (SteveHeimoff.com)

"I tasted this alongside the Olivet Court, and the difference was stark. The Starkey, which comes from the Sebastopol area, is much lighter in body and more delicate in structure. It’s also more transparent of the terroir, and less fruit-forward, not so much about raspberries and cranberries, although they’re there, but more subtle sensations. The tea, mushroom, beet, cocoa dust and anise flavors of Olivet Court are there, but the main difference is how light and ethereal this wine feels. The alcohol is only 13.2%. The wine has a grip that’s partly from zippy acidity, and partly from unresolved tannins, and the finish is absolutely dry. Production was 138 cases. I suspect most people will drink this wine soon, and that’s fine; give it some decanting, and enjoy with ahi tuna, lamb, a great grilled steak or wild mushroom risotto. But if you like your Russian River Valley Pinots with some bottle age, it will develop nicely over the next ten years, at least." - Steve Heimoff

92 points (JamesSuckling.com)

"A rich and flavorful pinot with dried strawberry and cherry character. Full body, fresh and clean fruit with hints of smoke. Juicy fruit character. Drink now." - James Suckling

2014 Pinot Noir Olivet Court - Russian River Valley

93 points (Pinot File)

"Vineyard is located on Olivet Road in Santa Rosa. Owned and tended by Bob and Ida Montgomery. 35+-year-old vines that are two different Martini selections. Harvest Brix 25.0º. 10% whole cluster. Aged 18 months in French oak barrels, 33% new. · Light garnet color in the glass. The scent of plum, blueberry-pomegranate and spicy oak lead to a middleweight styled wine with real interest. Extroverted flavors of purple grape and purple and black berries have a gentle accent of oak spice. Well-rounded, with a beguiling attack and mouth presence set off by well-integrated tannins and an exit that is long and chewy." - William "Rusty" Gaffney, M.D.

92 points (SteveHeimoff.com)

"What I like about this Pinot is that it has big, flashy, exuberant flavors, but also a complexity that gives it intellectual interest. The fruits suggest raspberries, cranberries, red currants and orange zest. The complexity derives from the earth, with tea, mushroom, beet root, anise and clove notes, finished with the sweet, smoky vanilla of new French oak. It’s a good wine, solid and well-made, with fine acidity and silky tannins. Should be more interesting in a few years, and could go to ten years while dropping sediment and purifying. The vineyard is west of Santa Rosa, and is said to be planted to vines more than 35 years of age. The alcohol is 14.1%." - Steve Heimoff

92 points (JamesSuckling.com)

"Serious intensity to this with dried strawberry and orange peel undertones. Medium to full body, silky tannins and a flavorful finish. Drink or hold." - James Suckling

91 points (Wine Enthusiast Magazine)

"This wine is impressively full-bodied, layered and concentrated in rich fruit—a mix of dark cherry, raspberry and toasty oak that finds life in buoyant, freshly supportive acidity and a light reckoning of spice." -Virginie Boon

2014 Pinot Noir - Russian River Valley

92 points (SteveHeimoff.com)

"It’s quite classic, with lively acidity highlighting flavors of raspberries, cranberries, balsam, crispy bacon, orange zest, tea, pepper and cloves. Bone dry, with moderate alcohol (14.3%) and a silky mouthfeel, it’s not an ager, but it’s a real beauty for drinking now, and every bit as good as the Olivet Court, which costs ten bucks more. Production was 130 cases." - Steve Heimoff

91 points (Wine Enthusiast Magazine)

"Juicy, thick and satisfying, this appellation wine is rich in red licorice and dark cherry with an expansiveness on the palate that impresses and lingers around a deft cradling of integrated oak." -Virginie Boone
